Federated design system
A federated design system distributes ownership of components, tokens and patterns across multiple product teams, under a shared core that holds the foundations and the contribution model. Each team can move fast on its surface area while pulling shared primitives from the core — the architecture that makes multi-brand design systems and large multi-product orgs (Atlassian, Booking, IBM) tractable.
The trade-off: federation only works with strong governance, clear ownership boundaries and ruthless discipline about what belongs in the core vs the satellites. Without those, federation becomes "everyone built their own" with extra steps. Our piece design system governance best practices covers the operating model in depth.
