Honister, real adventures, real memories

How we gave Honister a brand as raw and remarkable as the place itself, and a digital experience where real adventurers can make real memories.

Honister

sector Adventure Tourism

Honister Slate Mine sits 1,176 feet above sea level in the heart of the Lake District, one of the UK's most dramatic adventure destinations. The UK's original Via Ferrata, zip wires, mine tours, and an infinity bridge suspended 1,000ft over the valley. The experience is extraordinary.

The brand wasn't keeping up. When Honcho came on board, there was no coherent visual identity, no strategy to guide it, and a website that didn't begin to do justice to what visitors would find when they arrived.

A place this remarkable doesn't need to be sold hard, it needs to be represented honestly. The brief was to build a brand worthy of the landscape, then a digital experience worthy of the brand.

What does an adventure destination do when its competitors all say the same thing?

The outdoor tourism market is loud, every brand promises escape, adrenaline, and the great outdoors. Honister's challenge wasn't standing out visually. It was standing for something specific.

The insight was simple. Honister isn't an activity centre that happens to be on a mountain, it's a 300-year-old slate mine where you can walk a via ferrata, cross an infinity bridge, or zip wire over the valley. The place is the product. No other adventure destination can say that, because no other adventure destination is that.

Our response? Stop borrowing the language of adventure tourism and start owning the language of Honister.

Honister 2

Not a tagline, a positioning statement. 'Home of adventure' is a declaration that Honister isn't a pit stop on the way to somewhere else. The mountain is the product. The place is the point.

From this anchor, we built a brand narrative rooted in what makes Honister genuinely different: real rock, real weather, real memory. No scripted thrills, no polished rides — just challenges that demand courage and reward you with stories you'll carry for a lifetime.

By anchoring on place rather than experience type, Honister becomes uncopyable. Any competitor can offer a zip wire. No one else can offer this mountain, this mine, this history.

Honister promises real adventures that push you beyond the ordinary. Rooted in the Lake District, every challenge creates not just adrenaline in the moment, but memories that last a lifetime.

The visual identity embodies the brand idea. Every element of the system was drawn from the same source: Honister's raw existence and the fearless custodians keeping it alive.

The logotype is typographic and uncompromising. No iconography or metaphor. Just the name, set with the weight of somewhere that's been standing for 300 years.

The colour system is deep and authoritative, with energetic bursts. Instantly recognisable. A palette that's as distinct on a hoarding as it is on a screen.

Intentional typography and a bold photographic art direction complete the system, giving every touchpoint, from signage to social, a consistent and unmistakable voice.

The website had one job above everything else: turn interest into bookings. Honister's experiences sell themselves, the design's role was to get out of the way and let them.

The UX/UI was structured around how adventure-seekers actually make decisions: landing with intent, comparing experiences, and committing quickly when something catches them. Every page built to inform and convert, not just impress.

On the build side, Craft CMS gave the Honister team something as important as a good-looking site: independence. Full editorial control over content, products, and seasonal campaigns, without needing to brief an agency every time something changes.

Honister quote

Honcho gave us a brand that finally does the place justice. When we see it now, it feels like it couldn't have been anything else.
